defination
This prevents passage of food and gases.
occurs as the blockage in the large bowel.
Obstruction can be acute or chronic.
signs and symptoms
Nausea
Vomiting
Unable to pass gases
No bowel movement
Bloating
Abdominal swelling
Causes
Inflammatory bowel disease
Previous abdominal radiation
colon/rectal cancer
twists in the bowel
Previous surgery and scar tissue
hernias
Pathophysiology
Part of the bowel dies
When this happens pressure causes leakage
Blockage in the intestine
That spreads bacteria into the blood/body
Necrosis and perforation of proximal intestine
Management
When the patient becomes better anastomosis is done
IV infusion of normal saline and potassium given
Temporary colostomy is done
To maintain fluid and electrolyte balance
A patient should receive feed through nasogastric tube
Nursing care plan
Keep strict record of intake and output
Administer prescribed fluids
monitor patient for signs of dehydration
To maintain fluid balance
assess level of pain,location and duration
Give analgesics
To reduce pain
