PERIODONTITIS
DEFINITION
A gum disease condition that affects the tooth as it damages the soft tissues and bone supporting the tooth.
CAUSES
Caused by build up of plaque and bacteria around the teeth creating a reaction.
Smoking is also a risk factor leading to gum disease.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
An infection occurs in the gums causing bleeding.
As the disease worsens the teeth are lost.
TREATMENT
Good oral hygiene to prevent infection.
Brushing teeth using colgate twice a day and flossing.
Antimicrobial mouth rinse such as chlorhexidine to control or remove bacteria.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Alveolar bone surrounding the teeth becomes lost and soft tissues supporting the teeth become damaged.
If it remains untreated can result in loss of teeth.
NURSING MANAGEMENT
Educate the patient about good oral hygiene, brushing teeth.
Using colgate twice a day.
Provide mouth care to the patient.
Refer patient to the dentist.
DIET
Vitamin C - to fight diseases resulting in bacteria and assist to regenerate the gums.
Omega 3s - consists anti-inflammatory properties that are required by the body for a healthy immune system.
Healthy diet - e.g. vegetables
DIAGNOSIS
Plaque develops on the teeth with bacteria causes periodontitis.
