- - - - These ss need will be given a challenge. For example, they will be asked to lift a heavy water bottle, move it sideways, and put it on the floor gently. They will be given limited materials to design machines to do this.
        
        Throughout the course, they will need to work in small groups to design machines to meet the challenge goals. They will also learn about and follow the design steps of asking, imagining, creating, etc. To do this, I'll give them a worksheet with the steps and briefly go over them with the ss. I'll also monitor how well they're following the steps.
        
        At the end of the course, they will need to present what they've made in-detail. For example, they will need to tell the class about all of the simple machines that they used to create their designs. They also need to talk about any challenges they faced and the solutions that they came up with. Finally, they can show the class their simple machines in action.

- - - - These ss will be working in differentiated groups, e.g. a special needs group/ ELL group/ low-achieving ss group, to design a bridge, using the design process. The bridge will need to span a specific length and hold a certain amount of weight. It will also need to incorporate one simple machine, like an inclined plane, lever, etc. I'll monitor their progress throughout the process
        
        At the end of the course, each ss will need to briefly present their bridge. They can do this by pointing out any simple machines that they've used to create it and talk about a few challenges that they encountered while designing it. Finally, they will test the bridge by seeing if it can span the recommended length and hold the required weight.
      - ELL ss will be given simple machine vocabulary cheat sheets with translations, in their language, on them. They will also be able to use their native language a few times while they are working together designing their bridge. They can only use their language if they can't think of the English word that they'd like to use. But they will be encouraged to use English as much as possible.
      - Special needs ss will be assigned a helper. The helper will work with them to design and create models for the challenge. The helper will be especially helpful when the special needs ss are building models for the challenge.
