Indications
• Locate and measure tumours in the uterus and ovaries
• Confirm pregnancy
• Differentiate solid tumours from cystic tumours
• Observe growth of the graafian follicle during the menstrual cycle
• Measure the thickness of endometrium
Hysterosalpingoscopy and salpingogram
Indications
• Diagnostic and therapeutic
• To detect any abnormalities in the uterine cavity
• To detect tubal patency in the fallopian tubes
• Loosen adhesions
Procedure
• An X-ray of the uterus and fallopian tubes after injection of a contrast media into the uterine cavity.
• A scope can be introduced to view the uterine cavity
Magnetic resonance imaging
Indications
• Scan solid tumours in the uterus and cervix
• Distinguishing fibrosis produced by radiation from that of recurrent disease
Dilatation and curettage
Indications
• Secure endocervical tissue and endometrium for cytological examination
• Remove retained products of conception in incomplete abortion or following a vaginal delivery
Procedure
Cervix is dilated to allow passage of a curettage to scrape the endometrium of the uterus
