EXAMINATION AND DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES OF FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Auscultation
Listening with a stethoscope on the abdomen
Indication
• Identify bowel and uterine sounds
• Foetal heart beat or sounds
Rectal Examination
Indications
• To confirm vaginal examination findings
• To confirm rectocele and identify its position and extent
Procedure
• Patient lies in a lateral position with knees flexed and pulled up to the abdomen
• A gloved and lubricated index finger is gently inserted through the anus and moved around to feel the weakness on the wall, tumours or prolapse of other structures into the rectum.
Pap smear
Indication
• To detect abnormal cervical cells
Procedure
• Well -fitting gloves to be worn
• Vaginal speculum moistened with water
• Gently introduce speculum into the vagina
• A cotton wool swab is inserted to remove cervical secretions from the cervical os
• The secretions are transferred into a sterile glass tube with a tight fitting lid
Biopsy
Indication
To look for cellular changes in cases of persistent, irregular bleeding; postmenopausal bleeding or infertility
Procedure
A tissue sample is obtained from the cone of the cervix and endometrium.
