GLOBAL ISSUES AND THE IMPACT ON DESIGN
PLASTICS
8.3 billion metric tonnes of plastic has been introduced it is estimated that only 14% of plastic is recycled and has moved throughout the food chain and ending up on our plates that humans eat.
Even though the recycling symbol has been around throughout the years, this generations till doesn't recycle as much as we should. Plastics are known to contaminate the air we breath, food we eat and water we drink.
Plastic is ubiquitous. Plastics are one of the main products from the damaging process of fracking. Not all plastic is recyclable and not all recyclable plastic is recycled.
TOBERITE
TOBERITE mix is a new product on the market. Designed to achieve maximum structural benefit, it contains engineered polypropylene atoms, from recycled plastics.
'HIGH LINE' NY
Renewing discussed industrial, urban paces into green public spaces for connection and community enrichment. This project should challenge us to use reuse spaces to a green oasis to help connect people in a positive environment.
Example of creating public space that is environmentally sustainable.
EMBODIED ENERGY
Assessing the embodied material is offer a very complex task. Large amounts of thermal mass can significantly reduce cooling and heating needs within houses.
Guidelines for reducing embodied energy: Design for long life and adoptability. Use durable low maintenance materials. Ensure materials can be easily separated . Modify or refurbish instead of demolishing.
LIFECYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA)- LCA examines the total environment impact of a material of product through every step.
DESIGNING FOR WASTE
We as designers are responsible for planning the end use and deconstruction, selecting building systems with low waste rates.Choosing prefabricated products and identifying materials that can be used and source recylcable materials.
SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT: "Meeting the needs of the present without comprising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
WASTE
In Australia 20 million tonnes of building and demolition water was generated in 2014-15. 35% of this went directly to landfill. This issue is not sustainable or environmently friendly
Waste management- Waste materials generated from constructural activities are inert or non-hazardous. Sustainable management of construction waste your numerous strategies to avoid to eliminate, reuse, recycle and treat and dispose.
MATERIALS
MDF, PLYWODD AND PARTICLEBOARD
Commonly used materials- they are all pressed together using a resin adhesive. Formaldehyde within the resin is considered carcinogenic.
According to ICBES there are three formaldehyde classes: (E0, E1, E3)
Co2 EMISSIONS
They have continued to increase over 2017-18, an estimated 41 billion tonnes comes from the burning fossil fuels that are released into the atmosphere. The bulk from fossil fuels burnt for energy generation and large-scale industry.
Agriculture and extensive deforestation also contributing factors.
DEFORRESTATION
It's the permeant destruction of forests, it is estimated that 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation.
Reasons for deforestation: to make land available for housing and urbanisation. To harvest timber to create commercial items. To create ingredients e. palmful. To create room for grazing and farming. The disturbance of native type (lose of home and way of life for certain people).
Forest steward council (FCS): International non-profit, multi- stakeholder organisation. Established in 1993. Helps forest remain thriving environments for generations to come. Develops best practice standards.
