Inflammatory and infectious diseases(Vaginitis)
Definition
It is an inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain.
Causes
• A change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria or infection
• Reduced oestrogen levels after menopause
• Yeast infections
• Trichomoniasis
Medical Management
• A doctor may prescribe metronidazole that can be taken by mouth, metronidazole gel that you apply to your vagina
• Antifungal creams can be given such as miconazole
Assessment and common findings
Vaginal itching or irritation
Painful micturition
Pain during intercourse
Light vaginal bleeding or spotting
Health education
Avoid irritants, tampons and pads
Wipe from front to back after using the toilet
Wear a cotton underwear
Use a latex underwear
Risk factors
Hormonal changes such as those associated with pregnancy
Sexual Activity
Medications such as antibiotics and steroids
Having a sexually transmitted infection
