Chapter 17: Qualitative Data Analysis
Processes in qualitative analysis
Data Reduction
Selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting & transforming data
Data Display
An organized, compressed assembly of information that permits conclusion drawing
Conclusion, Drawing and Verification
Stepping back to consider what the analysed data mean and to assess their implications for the question at hand
Formats for analysis
Thematic analysis
Data analysed by theme
Highly inductive
Data collection & analysis take place simultaneously
Closely connected to comparative analysis
Content analysis
Researcher systematically works through each transcript assigning codes (numbers, words)
Used for open-ended questions which have been added to questionnaire in large quantitative survey
Discourse analysis
Known as conversational analysis
Look at patterns of speech (how people talk about particular subject, what metaphor they use)
Intuitive & reflective
Processing the data
Need to think about the data from the moment you start to collect the information
Need to judge the value of your data, especially that which may come from dubious sources
As research progresses, you need to interpret the data so that can be understood
Finally, you need to undertake the mechanical process of analysing the data
Practical advice
Start the analysis right away & keep a running account of it in your notes
Involve more than one person
Leave enough time and money for analysis and writing
Be selective when using computer software packages in qualitative analysis
