what is a wheel and axle?
A wheel and axle is special because it has an axle. The axle is a rod going though the wheel, allowing the wheel to turn around it. Then whatever is attached to the axle will stay upright while the wheel spins.

What is a screw?
A screw is often described as a wedge with ridges called threads. The screw passes through a hole in another object with treads on the inside of the hole that fit together with those of the screw. A screw converts rotational motion into linear motion.

What is a lever?
A lever consists of a beam and a fulcrum. A lever is used to lift or lower objects. There are three types of levers (as shown in the diagram). The mechanical advantage of the lever is the ratio of output force to input force.

What is an inclined plane?
An inclined plane or a ramp is a slope. One end is higher than the other, in an acute angle. Inclined planes are used to move things from a lower point to a higher point, or the opposite. Moving an object up an inclined plane takes the same work but less effort than moving the object straight up.

What is a pulley?
A pulley is a contraption used to lift heavy objects. A pulley is a wheel and axle combined with a chord, with a load attached to one end. By pulling down on one end of the rope, you can lift the load on the other end. Pulleys can be combined to multiply the mechanical advantage.
