Stages of shock
Compensatory
The body activates neural, hormonal and biochemical compensatory mechanisms in an attempt to remain in homeostasis and decreased the impact
Progressive
This stays initiates when the compensatory mechanisms fail. The cardiovascular systems begin to become affected, resulting in low BP and peripheral perfusion
Irreversible
The irreversible stage results in decreased perfusion from peripheral vasoconstriction and decreased CO exacerbate anaerobic metabolism. The internal organs are in failure which will lead to death
-
Cardiogenic shock
This type of shock happens when either systolic or diastolic dysfunction of the hearts pumping actions results in decreased cardiac output
-
-
-
Hypovolaemic shock
This type of shock is caused by a loss of fluids or blood in large volumes. This results in decreases in tissue perfusion resulting in cellular metabolism impairment
-
-
Neurogenic shock
This type of shock happens as a result of severe vasodilation and damage to the CNS and spinal cord.
-
-
Septic shock
This occurs due to uncontrolled septicaemia. This triggers an inflammation and immune response, causing a systemic change in cellular and tissue functioning
-
-
Distributive shock
Caused by abnormal distribution of blood flow which causes inadequate blood supply to the organs and tissues
-
-
Obstructive shock
This occurs due to a physical obstruction as a result of a restriction in the filling of the right ventricle
