DISCUSSION
NEXT STEPS
-
Ask people, for types of dissociation they had never experienced, to indicate how often they thought that experience would be positive/negative/neutral
Ask people to indicate, for the types of dissociation they had experienced, how often these experiences had been positive/negative/neutral
-
Possibilities
-
Could also be that people instead rate dissociation as a mostly neutral experience like previous study
-
-
IMPLICATIONS
Theoretical:
- Insight into how prior exposure affects people's judgement about future experiences
- Insight into the extent to which people draw on assumptions to inform their judgements
Practical:
- Provides insight into where these incorrect assumptions about dissociation stem from
- If we know where these assumptions stem from, we can begin to correct and destigmatize dissociation
General limitations
Retrospective:
-'Rose tinted glasses'
(Feldman-Barrett, 1997)
-
Don't explicitly ask people what they draw on
- memories
- which beliefs/assumptions about dissociation people are specifically drawing upon
-Media? Extreme examples?
