How is it that all the energy in the Universe came into existence in an instant at the Big Bang, when we know that energy can never be created or destroyed?
Well, according to the "zero-energy Universe hypothesis", there was no energy created. Neither was there any energy present prior to the event, as the whole idea of «prior» makes no sense at the beginning of time.

Instead, there was a separation of positive and negative energy, of which the sum was, and still is, zero.
Positive energy is all the energy in the Universe except gravity, which is negative energy.
They should not be confused with positive and negative electric charge, as these are both aspects of positive, or normal energy.

Think of it as being super rich, yet you actually have no money as your wealth exactly cancels out with your debt.
