PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
INTERNSHIP
Develop patience and understanding
Patience is one of those inherent character traits – but it is possible to improve yours. Practice thinking before you speak, or make patience your goal for the day. Snapping at students will only make things worse, you do not want to escalate a situation.
Student journals/ logs with reflective practices.
Journals are useful tools in the curriculum because they give students an ongoing opportunity to reflect on their learning. Students need opportunities to process what they have just learned and reflect on how that learning affects their lives. Keeping logs and journals are two strategies that reinforce reflective teaching and learning by helping students construct knowledge for themselves
Community building
It is important to have students feel comfortable to speak their minds. Building relationships with your classes and encouraging students to be themselves is crucial to their development
ASSESSMENT
Student self-assessment.
Work with students to develop self-assessment tools that encourage them to set higher goals in their journal writing. Challenge students to challenge their understanding, very meta cognition
Text Rendering activity
Students read a text independently, annotating as they read, get into groups and share important sentences. Finally, students will pick one work from the sentence and share, students discuss words, phrases and sentences to sum up the main idea of the text.
INSTRUCTION
Develop cooperative learning strategies for the classroom.
Use think–pair–share, where the teacher poses a topic or question. Students think privately about the question for a given amount of time, usually one to three minutes. Each student then pairs with a partner to discuss the question, allowing students to clarify their thoughts.
Develop different ways to gauge student learning throughout the lesson.
Create mini-whiteboards for each student so that as we work through the lesson students can write down their thoughts before putting it “in stone”
Discover the kind of teacher I will be
Some teachers are loud and energetic, others quiet and dedicated. There is no perfect mold of what makes a good teacher
PLANNING
Creating engaging lesson plans
People learn best when they are doing something fun and interesting. Be creative in your approach, find novel and enjoyable ways for students to learn
Developing cooperative learning strategies
Students working in small groups to complete tasks of projects. They should be structured so that each group member contributes to the task. Success is based on the performance of the group instead of individual students.
Create personalized lesson plan calendar to visually organize topics and monitor progress
Creating a lesson plan calendar will help to set the pace and give me and the students information about what comes next
