(i) epithelial cell destruction,
(ii)cellular oedema, and
(iii)airway obstruction by inflammatory debris and mucus

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
virus infects respiratory epithelial cell --> necrosis + inflammation + oedema + mucus secretion --> obstruction of small airways
