League of Nations
-
Aims
Disarmament
- aimed to implement disarmament to further reduce the ability of countries to wage war
- so that differences can be sort out in a peaceful manner through the League
- done through int agreements
- i.e. TOV on Germany
Collective Security
- Article 11 of League's Convent 'Any war or threat of war is a matter of concern to the whole League and the League shall take action that may safeguard peace
- main aim to work tgt towards preventing wars and conflicts. Achieving world peace through int cooperation.
Strengths
-
improved health through commissions that improved living conditions in poorer countries and targeted the treatment of specific diseases
As such it sig reduced the outbreak of leprosy worldwide
Weaknesses
Bullies
- too closely linked with TOV which was unpopular
- League was seen as an organisation that benefited victorious powers (i.e B&F)
- mandates(G's old colonies) were not self-governing by 1939
Structural weakness
- authorisation for any action required req a unanimous vote by the Council and a 2/3 majority vote in the Assembly
- with so many nations represented in the League, extremely difficult to obtain unanimous consent for any decision
-
Distrust & Appeasement
appeasement
- most members suffered from the impact of WWI and thus did not have the military capabilities to impose sanctions and deal with threats from powerful countries
- British's Royal Navy & French Army, despite losses cld have dealt with military threats but were unwilling to be involved
- 1930 Hitler's Germany, F&B chose a policy of appeasement
DIstrust
- members were unwilling to disarm as it would affect their ability to protect their interests and security
-
Limited Membership
- permanent members sought to rebuilt strength (economically and military weak after war) and were reluctant to be involved in conflict
- absence of US (policy of isolation)
- Germany (role in causing WWI) and USSR (communist ideology) seen as threat & not allowed to join
- major powers were not in League, weakening them greatly as strong countries are needed to impose sanctions effectively
