Types of stones and RF
- identify stone
- opaque or lucent
- risk factor modifications
- Kidney stones precipitate, so lots of volume makes stones less likely (hydration for management + prevention)
- Most people w/ RF mod will recur kidney stones.
Ca Oxalate (80%)
Opaque
Ca & oxalate in urine
- Thiazides
- diet change (decrease red meat protein and citrate :oxalate)
AMP struvite
Uric Acid stones
Lucent
- Gout
- Tumor lysis
- idiopathic (most common)
- Allopurinol for gout
- diet for gout (no EtOH, red meat, seafood)
- Rasburicase for Tumor lysis (if you forgot the prophy)

Opaque
- aggressive Abx
- stones in kidney = more recurrence: surgery
Pt: Colicky flank px
- radiates to groin
- ±Hematuria (common)
- no mass, fever :forbidden::fire:
- waves of contractions = px.
- at worst, can progress to hydronephrosis
- Pt will be writhing around
