Chapter 4 Deaf Studie
Language approaches
Total communication: started in 1970 by Ray Holcomb, a Deaf administrator and former teacher and can include ASL as well as manual codes of English, finger spelling, reading, writing, drama, gestures and speech.
Contact signing which is the natural signing of that comes about when Deaf people come in contact with hearing and speaking people or communities
Manual Codes of English are codes to teach English and combine ASL signs and invented English signs.
Simultaneous Communication is one of the easiest forms of communication for hearing people who aren't fluent in ASL and can depend on spoken and writing skills of English to compensate for the lacking ASL skills
Bimodal Bilingual Approach: classroom instructional technique and provides spoken English through children's hearing devices and also incorporates ASL using auditory and visual modalities
Cued Speech, a system that uses 8 hand-shapes, to designate consonants with four hand positions around the mouth to demonstrate vowels
ASL/ English Approach: used in state schools for the deaf and in mainstreamed and co-enrollment programs
Monolingual/ Oral Approaches focus on only spoken English, reading and writing with the goal being to give deaf children the opportunity to learn how to speak to be integrated to the public school system with hearing children.
