Most cases are seen in intensive care units. Usually A. Baumannii
Risk factor: weakened immune system, chronic lung disease or diabetes, long term intubation, associated with ventilator pnuemonia Pose a low risk to healthy people.
spread through direct contact and droplet
Treatment: Imipenem or meropenem but there is a steady rise in carbapenem resistance.
Commonly occur in soil and water.. Some species can survive exposure to common disinfectants and a broad range of temperatures.
May enter the blood stream. UTI's with this is associated with frequent catheterzation
Has the capacity to become resistant to many antibiotic
Resistant to: penicillin, chloramphenicol and aminoglycosides
Can survive on the skin or dry surface for weeks.
