Rules and Procedures in the Classroom
What will be your classroom expectations for behavior?
Mutual respect amongst students and teachers
Respect for others property and opinions
Late work will be accepted but will have a point reduction based on when the assignment is turned in
Participation will be graded because each students' opinion is valued
No interrupting another students while they are sharing
Bring materials to class every day
Assigned seating may be necessary depending of the class size and the student interactions
What will your beginning and ending of class will look like?
The beginning of class with start with verbal attendance being taken
If students are late, they need to submit a small statement in a box next to the door explaining why they were late
For the end of the day, the students will clean up the area or put the desks back, depending on the activity
Expectations and a game-plan for the next class period will also be addressed at the end of the class
How will you manage transitions/interruptions?
Planned transitions/interruptions (like fire drills, etc.) will be handled like normal. The plan will be addressed with the students and they will know prior to the interruption so they know what to do
Unplanned transitions/interruptions will be a bit harder to manage. Students will go through whatever procedure has been established prior to the transition/interruption. Besides that, once we all reconvene back in the classroom, everyone will be mentally drawn back in by using a "clap twice" method
How will you handle the use of materials and equipment?
Depending on the material being used, students may need to be assigned a certain one. For example. it may be necessary for a student to be assigned a specific laptop at the beginning of the year so they are help accountable for their specific one
For something like a classroom set of books, students will check out their book by writing their name and the book number on a piece of paper. When the book is checked back in, they will indicate this on the assigned sheet
What will group work look like in your classroom?
Groups will be in odd numbers to ensure that no 'ties" happen during a debate or a discussion
Each student will be assigned a specific role so everyone is important
The groups will be assigned back on different ability levels or skills. Students should be stretched but they should also enjoy the work
An accountability quiz will be given at the end of the work so the students are held responsible for their work
How will seatwork and teacher-led activities look like?
The work will be student-focused
The teacher may need to model the work, but the assignment will simply be facilitated by the teacher
Student participation is necessary
Students will be encouraged to work with the same group throughout the entire project. Even though it is important to work with new students and get to know their fellow peers, the longer the group is together, the more comfortable they will become. This will encourage student-led activities and work
