Module 4 Reflection
High Expectations and Communicating with parents
Video Observations
Behavior plans/Co-planning
Norms/Procedures/Transitions
I have learned that all 3 categories are important when managing the classroom. Once the teacher has implemented and discussed the norms and procedures, the students learn the appropriate behavior. Teachers can save time and focus on the lesson. Directions and rules should be short and to the point. Teachers must prepare students to start by using words such as "When I say start..." Practice and modeling is also an important concept to show the students the appropriate behavior. Positive praise and what to do directions will have students engaged and ready to learn. I've learned that once you let students have a bit of control, they will have fun with the rules and create them through discussion. Rules should be posted throughout the classroom so students can visually be reminded. Teachers should be consistent everyday and always have a backup lesson plan.
High expectations is a passion all teachers should strive for in the classroom. Teachers should expect success. Therefore, students will be challenged to think critically. Students will know the goals and expectations of each class. They will walk way better learners and understand that each day will be tough, but they can and will work through it. As far as communicating with parents, I love the idea of the Remind application to send out group notes, homework, or any important information. I can send updates so that parents are informed of any behavioral issues. This holds students accountable and tracks their progress. Monthly check ins can be setup to create a stable schedule and classroom contract.
I would have to say the PBIS website was a useful source that can help students with a variety of behaviors. The different tiers allow for a progression of finding out the root of the problem. It allows the teacher to use several methods before resulting to an automatic detention. The website also gives you a breakdown of the behavior. Sometimes a student may be acting out for other reasons such as nutrition, sleep, or issues ta home.Teaching social skills, giving positive praise, and genuinely getting to know your students will create a positive environment and help change the student behavior. Routine, habits, and small breaks can also help the student relax and focus on their behavior. If these strategies do not work, creating a daily behavioral form and monitoring can help identify the issue. Co planning is important to meet the needs of all students. Teamwork can allow students to work with others and learn from their peers.
Seeing videos of teachers was an eye opening experience. I still get a bit nervous when I think of when I need to start recording. It also makes me feel a sense of comfort in observing all the teachers. I thought some teachers were great, only to find out they performed horribly! I learned body language is important and the words you use can have an impact on a whole conversation. Being aware of all cultures is another key tool teachers should monitor. The teacher that went over the class contract stuck with me the most. She had such commanding attention and students seemed engaged and happy to be there. Seeing her take votes and talk with the class felt so natural. She had their respect and student's listened. Overall, all the teachers had some areas of growth, but they had had one thing in common; passion and love for their students.
