Positive Behavior Prevention Supports
Disrespectful Student
Tier 2 solution
Time out (structured time out): Create a space for a student to sit away from the class. Set a a time for how long they need to sit their to calm down. track how often they are made to go into time out. This can be discussed with the parents to suggest they go into timeout at home for their behavior.
Functional Behavior Assessment: IF a student is not responding well to tier 1 solutions then a teacher should give a simple or intensive functional behavior assessment to understand the student better. Use the filled forms and any data from parents, other teachers, and reports to come up with reasons why a student maybe behaving a certain way. Use this to create more solutions.
Breaks: If a student does not respond well to time outs. create breaks that feel less like punishments. create a card you can show them that gives them a break when they need time to relax
Tier 1 Solution
Reflection Sheet: Student must go to separate section of the class called the reflection area. They must write a reflection sheet of what they did that wasn't a good choice.Student will give it back to the teacher and have a discussion of what they could do next time. Can be awarded for completing reflection sheet.
Card Flip: Create or buy a card flip chart for the class. when a student is being disrespectful or misbehaving. flip a card so they can visually see that they have a warning or lose of a privilege. a teacher should be calm when flipping the card. have the student explain to you why they where given a warning or red card.
Use a calm neutral tone: When a student is being disrespectful, a teacher should talk to them calmly to reduce tension and set an example. stare into the students eyes when they are being rude and talking back. This should get the student talk at the same tone as you. This takes a lot of pratice for the teacher to keep themselves calm as well
Tier 3 solution
Behavior Contract: If student continues to have behavior issues a students can be given a daily behavior form. This form can be a chart that tracks the student's behavior for each class in each day. Student is able to see progress of their behavior with this visual chart. It helps promote self-responsibility and routine for the student
Counselor referral: Students that keep misbehaving or continue to be disrespectful may need to talk to a counselor. first get permission from the students parents beforehand. set a schedule for the student to meet with the counselor to talk. this gives a student an emotional outlet. they can have discussions on behavior and a student can feel less stress
Self monitoring: Sit with a student and discuss problems that the student might behaving. Create goals for the student to achieve. Teach the student techniques to calm down on or check themselves when getting upset. A student can take notes on their own each time they catch themselves acting out. Use their notes with your own to keep track of students progress.
Behavior: Dismissive, confrontational, ignores others, often frustrated, etc
Lack of Participation from student
Tier 2 Solution
Reward system : If a student isn't meeting academic goals or is not motivated. A reward system can be put in play to make incentives for the student to take part in the class. Create a point system to use a class management tool like class dojo. create the rewards for the student using a Forced Choice Survey.
Non-verbal cues: create a system of non-verbal cues to help the student keep on task. let them know what they are beforehand so that you can remind the student to do their work without bringing attention to the rest of the class. these cues can also be fore praise such as a thumbs up
Peer tutoring: a further step from a partner. student may feel embarrassed form getting attention from teacher. Ask other students who would be willing to work with another student. This creates a formal help system for the student. keep track of progress and meeting time through excel sheet
Tier 3 Solution
Teach relationship skills: If a student is still really struggling to take part in a class and lesson. They may need help learning to communicate better or ask others for help. This is why they don't take part in the lessons. A teacher can create a personal lesson for the student to help teach skills to build their confidence and help them learn specialized skills they need to work in the class.
mentoring: A student may need support from a mentor outside of class. They can help the student feel that someone is their for them. A mentor can meet them once a week to talk to them and help them with any problem. A teacher can help create a schedule for their mentors meeting times.
The Praise game: this can be used for the whole class. Separate the class into teams. Play everyday. create expectations and instructions that they need to follow. they can be award points for complete the tasks. I suggest using class Dojo or classcraft to award points and use timers for activities.
Tier 1 Solution
Positive Praise: Try to always praise the student for particpation or doing thing correctly. this helps build confidence for the student so they feel they are able to handle the class.
Assign a buddy or partner: By pairing a student with another peer, the student will be more likely to stay on task. this also helps the student learn social skills. they can learn skills from their peer as well. Create partner list for the class and create group lessons.
Call on student frequently: : Teacher should call on the student frequently to keep the student on task and keep their attention. Can call on the student when they are losing focus or become chatting. Can make a system to randomly call on students such as names in a hat.
Behavior: shy, disinterested and unengaged, short attention span, poor academic scores, poor social skills, "don't care attitude", etc
