Mycoplasma Bovis; Causes
Consequence one: Cost on Farmers
Money cost
Emotional cost
Stress
Have to restart most of their herds of cattle
More stress
Careful with how to move cows/restricts the movement of animals and where/how they move them
Government compensates the farmers if the farmers cow herds have to be culled
Cause One: Cattle are bought, sold and moved around the country regularly.
-----Disease spreads through a larger range of cattle because of the movement
Disease spread by direct contact between cattle and equipment
More cattle exposed to disease because they come near/in contact with
----harder to contain disease in one place
hard to track where disease is
More cattle get disease because they don't which cows have it and which don't
Sometimes cattle are infected but don't show any signs or symptoms
Cause Two: Goods and Products are imported all the time into New Zealand.
goods may contain disease
hard to see wether goods eg. cattle equipment carry the disease
hard to keep all diseases out of the country even though we are an island
Disease is spread through contact with infected equipment

Consequence Two: Controversy over whether New Zealand should try and eliminate the disease
If they do eliminate it
Lots of herds destroyed
Lots of stress on farmers
NZ becomes "mycoplasma free" again
No stress and illnesses in cows caused by mycoplasma bovis
Cost lots of money
If they don't eliminate it
Less herds destroyed
NZ loses its "mycoplasma free" status
Stress on farmers
There is no actual problem with the cattle products
Cattle remain sick and struggling
Makes cattle's life harder
Animal welfare problem
Many debates about it
Consequence Three: People are worried about the cow products they buy in supermarkets
Worried if it is bad for them
Worried if it contains bad things that will affect them
Worried it came form struggling cows
There is no actual problem with any meat or cattle products
Cause Three: There is no known cure for Mycoplasma Bovis.
Although some symptoms in cattle may be treated they will never be fully treated of the disease.
Cattle will always have mycoplasma bovis which means it will spread more through more cattle.
Consequence Four: Affect on cattle
Causes them to be culled
Causes many diseases and problems for the cattle
Abortions
Pneumonia
Mastitis
Ear infections
Swollen joints
