Identifying and helping students with special needs
STEP 02
Identify students who are struggling
Turn in work late
Fail to finish work
Never raise their hand to present/ participate
Are afraid to read or answer question in class
Bullied by other students that begin to realize they are falling behind
Assign a 'buddy' who would be a good fit
Email all parents of class about special needs child and inform them of the research studies of students with no need for special education that are in same class with one who does, have equal or superior results to comparative groups of non-inclusive settings
If this has started to happen, talk to class as whole about the special need and how to act
Impulsive, violent behavior
Have difficulty in following instructions
STEP 03
Diversify instruction
Use different techniques (but in consistent manner) to appeal to all types of learners: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/writing
If resources allow, use technology to encourage personalized learning: learn at own pace, ask questions/ discuss with peers and teacher online
Arrange classroom setting most effective for student
STEP 04
Assessment
After a term, review and reevaluate student with Learning Support teachers and identify next step
Is current learning system helping student?
If not, what can we change?
STEP 01
Check student questionnaire submitted by parents to school prior to start of year - identify if there are any students who require special needs
Depending on severity and need, ask school (if resources allow) to assign Learning Support teacher(s) for collaboration for area of need
If student has difficulties and cannot follow certain subjects, Learning Support team can pull out for small group instructions
Have regular weekly meetings with Learning Support to discuss student progress. Keep parents informed and hear from parents of any outstanding issues at home
If special need requires medical knowledge and care, share with nurse then discuss with nurse and parents and set protocol for different situations
