Ecology of the Mass Media
Reading
Mass media include screen, print, audio, and multimedia.
Mass Media is the form of communication in which large audiences quickly receive a given message via an impersonal medium between the sender and the receiver.
Media are intervening means through which forces act or effects are produced.
Chronosystem influences on the media are mainly relate to new technology.
Macrosystem influences on mass media include politics (laws), economics, and technology.
Mesosystem influences on the media include linkages with the community, school, and family.
Audio media/popular music engage children's attention and emotions with the sound while espousing certain values with the lyrics.
Contagion-The phenomenon in which an individual exposed to a suggestion will act on it.
Literacy-The ability to communicate through reading and writing.
Selective attention is choosing stimuli from one's environment to notice, observe, and consider.
The way screen media presents information affects an individual's perception of reality.
The form, style, and content of a show may influence how one perceives it.
Children are more vulnerable when seeing images than are adults. They are more likely to see things as reality instead of imaginary.
THe outcomes for children of mass media experiences are sometimes difficult to sort out because of the many variables involved.
Media and their messages can change, enhance, or interfere with experience.

Pornography is more evident today and it's getting harder to avoid it.
"The insidious evil of pornography no longer lurks in the shadows, waiting for the curious or the unsuspecting victim, it’s coming after you."
Pornography may appear beautiful and alluring almost irresistible, but pornography is fiction.
The powerful urges and feelings it arouses are real but stimulating those urges and drives with pornography creates the illusion that love and intimacy are only about sex and sex alone.
Pornography destroys those things that matter most to you. It is an insidious counterfeit of pure, self sacrificing love.
People have the mentality that they can stop at anytime. In reality, those desires and urges become more prominent and it gets increasingly difficult.
People who struggle with this think that they can hide it. I don't think they realize how noticeable it can be.
A young man or woman may waste countless hours, postpone or forfeit vocational or academic achievement, and ultimately sacrifice cherished, human relationships because of digital distractions, diversions, and detours that have no lasting value.
We need to be more aware at how long we are spending on screens and what we are doing.
Elder Bendar poses two questions that I think are important to think about:
Does the use of various technologies and media invite or impede the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost in your life?
Does the time you spend using various technologies and media enlarge or restrict your capacity to live, to love, and to serve in meaningful ways?
.
Recovery is possible. You are never too far gone or out of reach of the Savior
Media has a way of catching the audience's attention. They know how to "trap" people.
Gospel Connections
Media is affecting our homes.
"It is clear that social restraints that have helped reinforce family life are eroding and creating openings that devalue and dismiss precious time and activities in our homes."
A challenge Sister Klein gave: I challenge you to do something today to make your current home a place of comfort where you can enjoy meaningful people and events.
Every home is unique
When you take time to set aside media and spend it with family, you will become closer, grow, and learn more about yourself and others.
We can be happy in difficult times when we ask the Lord to bless us in protecting our homes.
