5D Counselling Process
Step 1: Develop Relationship
- Ensure employee feels comfortable to trust counsellor
- Occurs over a period of time
- Relationship cannot be built immediately
Step 2: Define Problems
- Counsellor to collect much information on employee's problems
- Analyse how to solve the problem
- Counsellor should:
~ listen attentively
~ reflect
~ question
~ empathise
Step 3: Determine Goals
- Goal: desired state an individual hope to achieve.
- Employee to state what they hope to achieve through counselling sessions
- Counsellor will work together with employee to achieve desired goals set
Step 4: Determine Action Plan
- Detailed plan generated to achieve goals set
- Employee to commit to follow plan closely
- Counsellor should ensure employee is on the right track
Step 5: Do a Follow-Up
- Counsellor to have regular checks to see progress of employee
- If no positive changes:
~ look for alternatives
~ change action plan
Skills of a Counsellor
1) Listening
- Show genuine interest in employee's life
- Pay full attention
- Paralinguistic cues shows attentive listening (i.e maintain eye contact)
2) Reflecting
- Show understanding of problem
- Paraphrase employee to show reflection
3) Questioning
- Coax employee to share information
- Use open-ended questions
- Avoid judgemental questions
- Avoid making assumptions
4) Empathy
- See things from employee's point of view
- Provide appropriate advice & solutions
