Death
-
The Clitherow house was searched in March 1586 and a frightened boy revealed the location of the priest hole
-
-
St Margaret was subjected to torture and was crushed to death on 25 March 2586 (Lady Day and Good Friday that year) even though she was pregnant with her fourth child
St Margaret was stripped and had a sharp rock the size of a man's fist on her back, the door from her own house was put on top of her and loaded with an immense weight of rocks and stones so the sharp rock would break her back.
-
Her last words were: "Jesu! Jesu! Jesu! have mercy on me!" and "No, no, Mr. Sheriff, I die for the love of my Lord Jesu"
Queen Elizabeth I argued that St Margaret should not have been executed and apologised to the citizens of York
