Settings
Garden Heights: A black neighbourhood that is poor. At the beginning of the book Starr and her family live here. Much of the book takes place in this neighbourhood.
Williamson High School: The "white high school." Starr goes to this school, it is a long drive away from Garden Heights. Some of the book takes place here as well. Having such a contrast in settings helps highlight various themes in the book.
2017 USA: This book takes place in 2017, in the United States of America. This is significant because currently, there are many issues to do with racism and police brutality (especially towards black people) in the US. Having the setting take place in this era brings awareness to the issue going on presently.
