more traditional Biomedical Model vs Health Psychology

diseases come from outside the body or originate as internal physical changes

individuals are not seen as responsible for their illness, they are regarded as victims

responsibility for treatment rests with the medical profession

illness may have psychological consequences but not psycho causes

but it became obvious in XX that mind & body are more interconnected

plus great risk to health not from TB or flu but chronic illnesses such TB, CHD, cancer, obesity, diabetes - all of them have clear behavior role

Humans are seen as complex systems & illness is caused by a multitude of factors

biological, psychological, social factors

not a passive victim

the whole person should be treated, not just the physical illnesses

patient is in part responsible for their treatment

take medication, change beliefs & behavior

indirect pathway - behavioral, the ways a person thinks influences their behavior

zip code matters more than genetic code

TED Rishi Manchanda - let's look at our working & living conditions

sick care system VS health care system

to improve health where it begins

a study in UK of 40 million residents - exposure to green space is the primary factor to prevent heart disease both for the reach and the poor

not just treating syptoms

“I am feeling stressed”

  1. A Focus on Variability

health & illness do not simply depend on severity of disease (heart attack) and knowledge (smoking is killing)

a range of psychological factors (cognition, emotions, social norms)

knowledge -> behavior

illness -> outcome
