WEATHER AND CLIMATE
SG weather elements
-
wettest + windiest: oct-apr (nov - jan: northeast monsoon --> bring continuous heavy rain --> afternoon + early evening showers)
-
-
equatorial climate (location: one degree north of equator --> receive same amount of heat all year round)
-
-
-
-
-
rain
annual: high: >1000mm, moderate: 250-1000mm, low: <250mm
formation of convectional rain: ground surface is heated up --> air in contact with ground is heated --> expands + becomes lighter than air around it --> rises (contains a lot of moisture) --> cools to condense and become clouds --> more water vapour condenses to form more tiny water droplets --> coalesce to form bigger water droplets --> become too heavy to be suspended --> convectional rain falls (usually accompanied by rain and thunder) as precipitation
-
-
humidity
-
relative humidity
-
as temperature increases, relative humidity decreases
increase in temperature --> expansion of air --> maximum amount of water vapour air can hold increases
-
clouds
made of tiny water droplets (condensation from water vapour that is water from water bodies that will evaporate and rise)
-
-
-
-
Weather is conditions over a short period of time(e.g. temperature, rain, relative humidity, winds, cloud cover, sunshine). Can be different in different areas.
-
Weather elements are primary conditions of the atmosphere (e.g. wind, clouds, sunshine, temperature, snow)
hottest places on earth: near equator --> smaller angle of incidence --> sun's rays spread over small area OR sun's rays travel less dist --> less heat loss through scattering THEREFORE --> more concentration of heat
lower latitudes --> angle of incidence is high --> heat is concentrated on a smaller area --> temperature is higher than that of places with higher latitudes (affects ANNUAL temperature range)
coldest places on earth: near north & south pole --> bigger angle of incidence --> sun's rays spread over larger area OR radiation travels further distance --> rays scattered more + heat is lost THEREFORE --> less concentration of heat
