Medieval Hospitals
The first hospital in England was created in 1123. At first hospitals were set uo by nuns and cared for older people, they provided food, warmth and prayers. By 100 there were over 500 in England

Care during the Industrial period
In 1700 there were only 5 hospitals in Britain but during the industrial period(18th to 19th centuries new hospitals began to appear. Whilst there was a move towards treatment in in hospitals, by the 1800s the increasing population put pressure on a system that was unprepared and remained unhygienic as they didn't understand germ theory, leading to more deaths

The importance of Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was a nurse who worked at KINGS COLLEGE HOSPITAL ,LONDON.
In 1854, during the Crimean war, she persuaded the government to send her and 38 nurses to help in the hospitals.
When she arrived , she was appalled at the dirty hospitals and high death rates amongst injured soldiers.
She focused on cleaning the hospitals improving hygiene and eating good food.
As a result , the death rate dropped from 40% to 2% over 6 months at the Scutari Hospital. She was called a national hero and this allowed her to encourage changes at home
