Why are cats in New Zealand?
Cats were brought to NZ with humans. They were also considered pests at the time. They were put into the wild back in the 1800's to control the rabbits and pest problems.
Why are cats pests?
In the 1940's. Brought to Mangere insland. Attemped control over rabbits. Ended up wiping out at least two types of seabird.
How do I stop my cat from becoming a pest?
Limit time outside and/or put bell on collar.

Why are rats in New Zealand?
Hitched a ride on boats. Enjoyed environment. Started eating birds, invertebrates, lizards, fruit, seeds, chicks and eggs of native birds and sometimes adult birds.
Why are rats pests?
Rats eat basically everything that is edible in some way, which decreased out native birds.

Why are mice pests?
Eat native species, plants natives eat too. Affect every part of ecosystem.
Why did people bring mice to NZ?
Brought probably by accident. 1824 came here, on ship from Australia, 'Elizabeth Henrietta'.

Why are Hedgehogs pests?
Eat native lizards, snails, invertebrates, bird eggs, chicks.
Why did people bring Hedgehogs to NZ?
Brought by early settlers. Make them feel more at home. Thought to eat slugs, snails, vegetable gardens. Hedgehogs all around NZ.

They were named after pigs (Hogs) cause of their grunting noises.

Long, thin furry bodies. Stoats, black tip on end of tail. Carnivores.
Why are mustelids are pests?
Eat Native, Endemic Birds, their chicks and eggs, invetebrates, rodents, lizards, hedgehogs, fish. They climb, swim, hunt day and night.
Why did people bring mustelids to NZ?
Brought here 1870-1880 to deal with rabbits. Favourite food, rabbit. Back then people didn't understand the danger toward Native Birds.

Why Possums are pests in NZ.
Eat leaves, eggs, chicks of Native Birds. (Kereru, Kiwi, Tui.) Can do lots of damage to Native Birds and plants.
Why did people bring Possums to NZ?
Brought to NZ 1837 for their furs. People didn't know they were eating birds, plants, insects. No predators to limit numbers.

Both Rodents, scavengers, body shape, worm-like tails, prefers sweets, grains eat, Omnivores, carry diseases, breed quickly.

Weasels smaller, 20cm, brown on throat, underside white. Stoats, black tip on tail, bigger, shorter tail, white chest, grow up to 25cm. Ferrets, black footed, larger, 35cm to 45cm, white or yellow underside.
