Psychodynamic Approach
-
Evaluation
- researcher bias - Bowlby diagnosed them, he knew who were the thieves and non-thieves therefore biased results to meet expectations
- lacked external reliability - case studies - 'unsystematic and unplanned' therefore difficult to replicate to check for consistency
- high external/ecological validity - all based on real life, naturally occurring behaviour - no artificial manipulation of ppts
- unrepresentative sample - low population validity
- Interviews - mums give answers that are socially desirable to make themselves look good rather than the truth
- control group - matched pairs design
-
-
- low external validity if influenced by researcher bias
- Schaffer + Emerson - children can form multiple attachments therefore disagree with Bowlby's focus on the mum as the only important attachment
- Bifulco - separation from mum = twice as likely to develop depression or anxiety (250 females) therefore agrees that separation from mum = emotional problems later in life
