Geographical Concepts
Scale
Scale is measured by the spatial level whether the area is small or large. For example how climate change is affecting the sea levels rising caused by the melting of the ice caps.
Interconnection
Nothing on Earth exists in isolation; every living and non-living thing are connected in some matter. Connection can be on a local, national or global scale.
-
Environment
Environment is summarised as living and non-living components and the way they are organised. The coherent relationships people have with the environment: perceive, use, change and impact hazardous substances.
Sustainability
Sustainability is the ongoing of Earth's capacity to maintain all life. To ensure Earth's resources are rationed equally for future generation.
Space
Space is investigating the way that things are arranged on the Earth's surface. Geographers define features as: location, organisation and spacial distribution.
-
Change
The Earth has been changing on a rapid basis over millions of years. This can occur through natural forces (volcanoes, tsunamis etc...) and by human influence (deforestation, mining etc...)
Place
Place is part of the Earth's surface identified and given meaning by people. Places aren't identified by size. Places can be either be natural or synthetic.
Mapping Skills
-
-
B.O.L.T.S.S-is an acronym that helps geographers memorise the six essential concepts comprised in a map.
Legend
The legend is a list of simplified symbols/lines to represent physical and cultural characteristics on a map.

Grid Referencing
4 Figure Grid Reference
A 4 figure grid reference is a geographic grid system to locate all places on Earth. The 4 figures are divided into two categories the eastings and northings.
6 Figure Grid Reference
A 6 figure grid reference is a geographic grid system to locate all places on Earth and is much more precise than the 4 figure reference, The 6 figure reference is more commonly used on maps as its more precise.
Graphs
-
Climate Graph
A climate graph is a graph that displays the annual temperature and precipitation statistics of a particular location.
-
Biomes
-
Aquatic Biomes
Types of Aquatic Biomes
-
-
Freshwater
Contains very little salt and are found on land; includes lakes, rivers, and wetlands
-
A distinct area of similar weather, climate, soil and geography and fauna and flora that have adapted to the environment.
Alterations to Biomes
-
Desertification
Desertification is the process of fertile fields becoming dried and arid as a result of deforestation, drought or inappropriate agriculture.
-
Food Security
Food Security is a state where all people at all time have plentiful access both physically and economically, to a sufficient quantity and variety of affordable, nutritious food to sustain dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy and active lifestyle.
