American Landscape
Elements of Art
COLOR
The color aspect of this artwork connects to the message of the piece. The main colors used here are brown, gray, sandal, and light dulled blue. All of the of colors used are very depressing. This reflects the author's opinion on industrialization so instead of celebrating and rejoicing the industry, he is sad and heartbroken about what it did to the natural landscape.
TEXTURE
The texture in this master piece by Charles Sheeler is accurately depicted. One excellent example of this technique is the clouds and smoke coming from the factories. The brush strokes
LINE
In this landscape, the lines are sharply defined,
and are largely geometric forms. The rail roads tracks which consist of lines connects steel mils, blast furnaces, glass plants, and the famed assembly line. This also ties in with unity.
Principles of art
MOVEMENT
Movement is a big part of this artwork. All the lines connecting different parts of the picture such as mills, and workstations, move the audiences eyes. The artist wanted to guide our eyes to convey his messsage.

CONTRAST
I chose contrast as one the principles of art represented because of the huge difference between the subjects. Sheeler combined the elements of land and water to create a contrast between them. This emphasizes how important those two elements are and how they should be equal to each other.
UNITY
Focusing on lines that connect all the subjects in this landscape. The railroad tracks connecting all the buildings also gives the audience a sense of unity.

Symbolism
The symbolism in this art piece is amazing. Since Charles Sheeler's message is about industrialization destroying natural landscape, he added in many details that represent this.
The only thing in this painting that's left of the natural world is the sky, and not even that escapes the effects of mass industrialization, the smoke rising from a smokestack blends into the clouds making them just another by-product of industry.
The river in this painting is also symbolizing the artist's message. Instead of a natural body of water flowing freely across the landscape, the water is contained in a canal, an artificial channel that controls its flow.
Message
The message of this piece is very straight forward.
Charles Sheeler is conveying the message that industrialization is taking over the traditional American Landscape. For example, instead of having a natural body of water such as a lake or a pond, This landscape has a contaminated canal and an artificial channel that controls its flow.
