Just War Theory
The right to go to war
- War must be declared by a proper authority (e.g. a king)
- There must be a good cause not just simply greed
- The reason for going to war must be a desire to do good
- War must be a last resort after ALL attempts of peace have been considered
- The good which is likely to result from having the war must be greater than the harm done in waging it
- It must be possible to win. A war against a much more powerful enemy is not considered 'just'.
- Proportional force - the war must be fought 'fairly'. The amount of force used must be just enough to succeed. Opponents must not be deliberately cruel.
