Healthy vs. Unhealthy Food Prices & Relation to Obesity
Convenience
Not only is it easy enough to access fast food, but the industry is growing enough that you can have it delivered to you, which only adds to the problem.
However, now that I live on my own and am so busy that I don't have time to cook, I tend to stop by at restaurants to get easier and faster cheap food.
Another thing I learned was the importance that convenience adds to these unhealthier foods and how that can connect to the issue of obesity.
Obesity
I want to connect this issue with obesity, and see if this may be the only, if not one of the most important, reasons that we have the issue of obesity in our country.
I learned the amount of people affected by obesity and how many of those are children, it is a shocking amount.
the link to obesity is important because it is a rising problem and can lead to death.
Once people are obese, it is hard to go down from
these lessons are valuable because it relates to a very scary and hard health issue that many people of america face.
Fast Food
I want to focus on the price differences in unhealthy foods (such as fast foods, or could be processed foods at markets as well)
The reason this topic and this perspective of healthier foods being more expensive is important because the fast food is a thriving and growing industry.
It is important that these food industries realize that they are causing a massive health issue by making the prices the way they are.
I am interested in this topic because throughout my childhood and my whole upbringing, I never really went to fast food restaurants.
I always had some home cooked meal, three times a day, so I never felt the need to go to fast food restaurants.
Societal Effect
The amount of money I have spent on going to fast food restaurants alone has been massive and I cannot imagine getting healthier options.
Living in Boulder as well, i have noticed that many of the options here are organic and on the healthier side, therefore are expensive.
Because of the prices, i even stay away from them, so I can understand why others would as well.
They are significant because what people eat starts with a choice that they must make.
This topic matters because we all live in the US and obesity is so common that i am sure many people know others that are in this situation or are at risk of being in this situation.
Money is something that everyone values, and if we can make this little change, we wouldn't have to spend the large amounts that comes with heath issues.
Solutions
While this is a big issue and would require collective action to make a change, I can use my knowledge to propose an idea that would benefit all industries, farming, fast food ,and markets alike
The solution of extra tax on unhealthy foods is a big one because it is something that everyone will have an opinion on.
However, if tax money is collected in these foods and that tax money is used to fund organic farms, we may be able to come back in a full circle.
Taxing something like fast food may . make it harder to access it, but it can save you in the long run from very difficultly reversible issues such as obesity.
Organic Price Reasoning
I want to start off explaining what the process is of both types of foods, processed and organic, because I want to give a basic understanding of what my essay will be about.
if the readers have general knowledge about how these foods come about, they will have a better understanding of the things written further on.
the first thing was the process that these healthier foods go through before they are available to consumers.
i realized that organic farmers and people that provide these healthier foods do have a reasonable argument for why it is more expensive.
I cannot imagine getting healthier options.
