Stop bullying on the spot
Do:
Intervene Immediately
Separate the kids
Make sure everyone is safe
Meet medical or mental health issues
Stay calm
Model respectful behavior
Do not:
Ignore it
Immediately sort out the facts
Question the children involved in front of others
Make other kids publicly state what they saw
Make the kids apologize on the spot
Get police help or medical attention if:
Weapons are involved
Serious or threats of serious medical injuries
Threats of hate-motivated violence (hate crime)
Sexual abuse
Accused of an illegal act (robbery or extortion)
Find out what happened
Keep all children involved separate
Get the story from several sources (both adults and kids)
Listen without blaming
Don't use the word "bullying" while talking about what happened
Determine if it's bullying
What is the history of the kids involved? Have there been past conflicts?
Is there a power imbalance?
Has this happened before? Is the child worried it will happen again?
Have the students involved ever dated?
