Assignment 19: Bullying of Children: The Roles of Children
Not labeling children
Easy to call the kids who bully others "bullies" and those who are targeted "victims," but this may have unintended consequences, such as:
Sending the message the behavior cannot change
Failure to recognize the multiple roles of the children involved
Disregard other factors (peer influence, school climate)
Kids who bully
Engage in bullying behavior towards their peers
Require support to change their behavior
Address any other challenges that may be influencing their behavior
Kids who are bullied
Targets of bullying behavior
Need help learning how to respond to bullying
Kids who assist
May not start the bullying or lead in the bullying behavior
An assistant to the children who are bullying
Encourage bullying behavior, and will sometimes join in
Kids who reinforce
Not directly involved in the bullying behavior but they give the bullying an audience
Often laugh or provide support for the bullier
Encourages bullying to continue
Outsiders
Remain separate from the bullying situation
Do not reinforce bullying behavior, but they do not defend the child being bullied
Often want to help, but do not know how
Need to learn how to be more than an audience or a bystander
Kids who defend
Comfort the child who is being bullied
Will defend the child when the bullying occurs
