Vibration Hazards
Most power tools are vibratory in nature that can impart vibrations in people (chainsaw, lawnmower, etc)
Body vibration can increase heart rate, oxygen uptake, respiratory rate.
Produce fatigue, insomnia, headache, shakiness after exposure. Unclear of long term effects.
For hand & arm vibrations, there tends to be a vasospastic syndrome known as Raynaud's syndrome (or dead fingers), which is usually permanent.
Takes several months of exposure around 40 to 125 Hz vibration to occur
Means of reducing Raynaud's syndrome:
- Reduce transfer of vibrations from hand tools.
- Protect hands from extreme temperatures and direct air blast.
Ways to reduce vibration transfer from hand tools:
- Make hand contacts large and non-localized
- Dampen handle vibrations with rubber or other dampening materials
- Require operators to wear gloves, particularly with vibration-arresting pads
-
