SRK (Skill, Rule, Knowledge) Based Behavior
-
The received sensory input results in cognitive processing at either skill-based level, rule-based level or knowledge-based level, depending on operator's experience.
- Extremely-skilled people tend to process input at skill-based level.
- Do not have to interpret / integrate the cues to think of actions, but only respond to cues as signals that guide responses.
- Signs are used to select appropriate motor pattern.
- For people familiar with task but no extensive experience, they process input and perform at rule-based level.
- Input is recognized based on system states (signs), triggering rules from past experience.
- E.g. following a recipe.
- Rules are "if-then" associations between cue sets and the appropriate actions.
- Novel situation, no rules from previous experience to recall.
- Operate at knowledge-based level (analytical processing using conceptual information)
- After assigning meanings to the cues and integrating them to find out what is happening, the cues are processed as symbols that relate to goals and action plan
