Yr 9 Refugee Camp
Activities we did:
-
-
A 'hike' around the front field. Then we had to cross an illegal border by going under and over a 'fence'.
-
-
-
We all tried to fit in a small area to simulate being cramped on a life boat. It was very cramped and was hard to imagine being like that for a few hours.

Best Thing Was...
I really enjoyed the challenge of crossing the border illegally because we replicated the situation of how careful you had to be to not hit the, what we used 'rope '. Our group had to communicate well and we learned that one person had to cross straight away or else our personal gear would get stolen.
The best thing was for me was crossing the borders as they were
challenging and a good way to find out how hard it would be to cross the border.
I enjoyed the crossing of the illegal border. I I liked trying to get through the string and the way that the teachers started stealing the bags made it more realistic. I also enjoyed Adi coming to talk to us about his challenges as a migrant, it really helped to visualise what it would be like.
I enjoyed crossing the legal borders and to cook dinner because it was getting dark really fast and our water was taking a really long time to boil. Luckily we got our torches out and we finished making our rice.

What we learned
-
-
I learned how strong refugees are. Refugees live through very hard times and they have to be so mentally strong to leave everything behind and not know if they will make it to safety. I experienced how 'easy' we have our life and we sometimes take it for granted.
-
I learnt a lot about the struggles of a refugee and the sorts of thing that make their journey harder. It was really good how we simulated some of the challenges to make us realise how lucky we are.
