Before driving you must check the vehicle tax has been paid on the vehicle you're driving, hold a valid driving licence, have valid insurance, ensure the vehicle has valid MOT
Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN) is used if you're not going to use your vehicle on public roads. It means you don't have to pay public tax as long as you tell the DVLA. It lasts until you tax, sell, or scrap your your vehicle.
You can drive vehicles that are more than 40 years old without an MOT test, but they must be in a roadworthy condition.

Insurance
You must have at least third-party insurance before driving on public roads: it covers injury to another person, damage to someone else's property, damage to other vehicles.

If you get six penalty points within two years of passing your practical test you'll have to re-apply for a provisional license, pass your theory and practical tests again.
Any points on your provisional test will be transferred to your new license when you pass your test.
My insurance policy may have an excess of £100. This means I'll have to pay the first £100 of any claim for damage to my vehicle.

Cars must first have an MOT test when they're three years old (four in Northern Ireland). MOT certificates are valid for one year.
Trailers and caravans don't need an MOT, but they do need to be kept in good order.

If you're vehicle is unused or off the road it must have either SORN or valid insurance. If you ignore subsequent reminders you risk: a fixed penalty fine of £100, court prosecution and a fine of up to £1000, having the vehicle clamped, seized and destroyed.
If you're vehicle doesn't have an MOT certificate: you won't be able to renew your vehicle tax, you could be prosecuted, your insurance may be invalid.

The expiry date on a new MOT certificate will expire 12 months after the expiry date on the old certificate. pg.408
A cover note is issued by an insurance company as a temporary insurance certificate. It usually lasts one month.
SORN allows you to keep a vehicle off-road and untaxed. This will end when a vehicle is taxed, sold or scrapped.
If an officer asks to see your documents you will have 7 days to produce them if you don't have them already.
Vehicle registration document contains the date of registration, registration number, registered keeper, previous keeper, make of vehicle, year of manufacture and colour.
