History of Children's Literature
John Newberry came up with the "Little Pocket Book" in 1744. This was the beginning of children's publishing of books. The "Little Pocket Book" had the alphabet in the book with some stories. The book was educational and entertaining.

John Locke stated "gentler ways of raising children", back then children were treated like adults. Children had to work. John Locke recommended books for easy and pleasant to read for children.
Wasn't until the 20th century child labor laws come into effect.
American's start talking to babies as "intentional beings" as soon as they are born. Other cultures don't talk to babies as intentional beings until they are older.
Back then only the extremely wealthy children had books. The poor children only heard stories through story tellers.
This is were the Aesop's Fables came from. These stories are from when children were told the stories and did not have books.
The Horn book was used during the 15th -17th century. This was paddle board that had the alphabet and bible verses written on the paddle. The children carried the paddle around.
The first picture biik was the Obris Picture books. This was in 1657 the books were introduced.
Children's books in those days were only about religion, morals, and manners. The Chapbooks were not about religion, they were fun stories to read ex. Robin Hood. These books were sold on the streets for a penny by peddlers. Children loved the Chapbooks.
The 1800's began with stories like "Snow White" fairy tale stories and "The Ugly Duckling".
Louisa May Alcott wrote the book "Little Women" in 1868. This was the first published book that was not about religion. The book was based on real people with real problems that everyone could relate to. The book was intended for adults but children loved reading the book.
Early children stories were written in magazines. St. Nicholas Magazine in 1873.
Many children's stories were to teach religion, morals, and manners.
By the 19th century, books were made with stories that had phonics and repetitive words. When the printing press came out more and more books were printed for children.
Genres of Children's Literature
Genres are the categories in Children's literature.
Basic genres:Fiction, Non-fiction, multicultural literature, Poetry, and Traditional Literature.
Fiction - Subgenre has fantasy books. Books that are about magic, supernatural, books that cannot be real.
Books about animals talking, ghost stories, magic powers, and time warp.
Science fiction is books that are technology based books about technology that has not been invented yet. Science fiction is books that are about science that hasn't been discovered yet or doesn't exist.
Non-fiction is informational books. Books that are real life, books about athletes, bibliography's on movie stars.
Multicultural literature is about not only about race. Multicultural literature is also about social class, gender, religion, and sexual orientation.
Poetry literature has traditional rhymes like mother goose, playground rhymes like Miss Mary Mac, Narrative poems(Poems that tell a story). an example is "Twas the Night Before Christmas". Folksongs is another poetry example.
Traditional Literature is stories passed down from through different generations. These are stories about culture's history and the values of a culture. People didn't have books available to them or T.V. Fables are another example of traditional literature. These stories are about morals. Myths and legends are more examples of traditional literature.
