Biology 1
Diffusion
Diffusion is the passive movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration on a concentration gradient Until the particles are evenly distributed.
-
An example of diffusion in animals is the Alveoli, it has a large surface area to allow more diffusion to happen between the cell and the bloodstream.
An example of diffusion in plants is a plant cell they like to be full with water (turgid) and so they allow water to diffuse into the vacuole.
The rate of diffusion can be affected by temperature as the hotter the solution is the particles will vibrate faster. The surface area will increase this as well and the concentration gradient.
Active transport
Active Transport is when particles go against the concentration gradient in order to go from an area of low concentration to high concentration, this, however, is not massive and requires energy.
-
Example in animal cells- glucose in villi cells (in the small intestines)
Example in plant cells- soil ions in root hair cells.
Lungs
-
-
How are they adapted? Large surface area, thin walls and lot's of capillaries.
Leaves
-
-
How is it adapted? Leaves reduced to spines, less stomata and waxy leaves.
-
Osmosis
osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane.
