Education -Plutarch
He doubts Lycurgus created the Krypteia, judging his character as so 'mild and fair'. He seems to think the institution began after the helot revolt in 464.
It was essentially an assassination squad made up of eirens. It seems the most skilled men were chosen- an honour?
They were sent out, implied individually, with a dagger and rations. Hid by day, and murdered helots by night.

May explain the killing of 2000 after 425. Most likely to revolt.- uncertain of the link to Krypteia (Plut using Thucydides who doesn't link it together)

He says older boys took charge of the 'troops' of boys, but then states eirens were in charge of those over 12.
-
Boys and youths (over 12 it seems) would normally eat in a communal mess with the eirens responsible for them
The education system was designed to enable a boy to uphold the excellence of the Spartan ideal and contribute to the state.
It was intended to create cohesive citizenry. Plutarch says minor financial agreements were not written down implying there was large levels of trust.

Plutarch seems to support Xenophon's info on relations between Spartiates and boys. But he says it was eirens and boys

When a boy was born the Gerousia decided his fate. If they felt the boy was weak he would be thrown from 'The place of Rejection' the Apothetai
Boys began the agoge at age 7. They lived in group barracks until they were 30. At 19/20 it was the army barracks.

Plutarch suggests there was political talk at messes, but there was fun and joking to a degree too.
Some helots were forced to drink unmixed wine so they became drunk. They were paraded as a warning against drinking.
