Aesthetics
This product would have an LED counter at the top of the pressure pad, this would give it a nice modern style with the counters on top and it would be effective for the style of the piece
It would have a large surface area for the button that you must press in to count laps, this would be effective for the user to press as it should be able to be used by any age person or gender aswell
The shape of the piece would be a rectangle that has rounded off edges for safety of the customer you could attach to the sides of a pool but it must not have sharp edges so i would use curved edges
Customer
This customer would be somebody that swims but would like to keep track of all their progress when either training to do swimming or to even casually go along exercising
This product could also be used for a professional swimmer to keep progress in check after tournaments or even when training for a tournament/competition
One possible other customer could be someone who runs a swim club as they could use this to keep track of students progress when they doing lessons or training for them
Size
The piece would not be massive so that it can be moved around if necessary and stored away without taking much space where ever it is stored or used
The piece would be small enough so that the weight would not pull it off the wall or give issues in the same matter regarding the suction cup on the back of the piece to hold it up and prevent falling
The piece would roughly be around 10-15cm in height and 10-15cm so that it would fit nicely and also be space efficient for somebody who does not have much space for it or for somebody who does not want to use much space to store/use it
Function
The piece would be used to count how many laps the user has achieved in the pool after each lap they have done
It must have a rest/restart button so that when the user is finished they can start again once they have decided to restart their laps or are doing a new challenge etc.
It must have an on and off button so that when not in use it can conserve power. this can save money and battery life so that the piece can be used for a long time and the battery life would be very efficient
Materials
Copper wires, these are used to conduct electricity in the piece and they would be used as wiring in the product
7 segment counter, this would be wired up in the piece to display the number of laps completed by the user of the product
Breadboard, this is used to place all components of the products when you are wiring the system together
Plastic screen, this would be used to cover electronics of the piece but it would also be used to display the 7 segment counter for the piece
White Acrylic, this could be used for a case on the product i will produce
Suction cup, this would be used to hold the piece against a surface so that it can be held up for easy use in a pool
Clear Acrylic, this could be used for a screen for the piece
Cost
This product would cost anywhere from £10-£20 due to the manufacturing and the material used for the product, with research of the different products available on the market i have discovered these prices e.g swimming lap counter product on amazon is around £15.99
The product would cost around £5-£10 to manufacture due to electronic equipment and various other items like plastic cover etc, i will try to research using my coursework whether i can reduce the price even more than it already costs
I think the price is customer-friendly due to the price being in the range of £10-£20, this could be reduced with different materials which i will research in my coursework
Safety
The piece would need to cover the electronics inside so it would need to be waterproof, if water gets into the piece it will completely destroy the electronics in the piece but it would also be hazardous if exposed to the pool
The piece would need to have rounded edges as sharp edges could be potentially dangerous for the user as they can cause cuts and could trap skin if caught
Tests must be run on the piece before use so that the electronics are certainly covered properly, if they are not correctly wired together it could be potentially dangerous for the user
No electric conductors must be used on the piece other than the copper wires, otherwise the electronics on the piece could be dangerous for the user as they could receive a nasty shock from the wires
Environment
This product would have some parts that are recyclable like the plastic cover of the piece, rubber can sometimes be recyclable and the suction cup on the back would be recyclable as well, if i use an acrylic cover that is a very recyclable material so it may be better for the environment to use this for an outer case
Pieces like the electronics would not be recyclable due to the materials for example in the wire and in the main body of the product, this cant be reduced as they have to be copper wires to conduct electricity which is the whole point of using them and using 7 segment counters or LED lights are a necessary and also can not be substituted for another material
