Differentiation Strategy for The Three Groups of Students:
I had a high level Chinese intensive reading class and we were learning a text about celebrating the Chinese spring festival (the most important festival in China). The text includes the introduction of the origin of Chinese festival, the customs of different areas to celebrate the spring festival and some advanced words to deliver the information.
Group 1: the 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult questions correctly in the pre-assessment
Group task 1: Make a story with selected important words from the text. The story should have rich information and be logical. They will be allowed to use computer to look up the words if they need.
Group task 2: Research online and look for another 2 important festivals in China and prepare a presentation to the class.

Group 3: The 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs

The teacher will prepare and show pictures and videos to explain the content of the topic to these 2 students and they will be given a few questions about the content we just learned to work on together.
The teacher will demonstrate some words and grammar to them directly and give them related practice.

Group 2: The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills.
Task 1: Read the text and answer a few comprehension questions with a partner. When they finish they will check their answer and understanding with the teacher.
Task 2: Outline the important words and expressions, look up on the computer and make sentences with those words. They will also be given a sheet with a few sentences on and they need to discuss with their partners to find the rule of the grammar. The teacher will come back and discuss with them in 20 minutes.
