Was played originally by servants as they acted as messengers for the upper class. these upper class people became patrons to the servants speed as they noticed that they were fast. patrons were members of the gentry that looked after the lower class and arranged competitions for them

a betting culture began on these servants and became very enjoyable for the gentry

society moved from hevily agricultural to be ing dominated by factories

decreased rural areas/land

urbanisation!!! - large numbers of people moving from rural areas into towns and cities, seeking regular work in factories

people worked in factories so only had sunday off and were much stricter hours resulting in less popular recreation

popular recreation tuned into rational recreation

rational recreastion has more order, logic and structure
