Time sampling
Disadvantages of Frequency
Allow recorder's bias to enter recording
Results are highly selective
Can only measure one kind of behaviour
Can lose raw data with no details recorded
Advantages of Frequency
Easy to interpret
Can display large data sets in concise manner
Identify obvious trends
Quick to record
Useful to measure frequently occurring behaviours
Disadvantages of Time sampling
Student and teacher cannot interact with each other
May miss out some important information while recording
Takes time and training to do
Do not know when the behaviour will start or end
Only used when children have choices
Characteristic of Frequency Count
An exact count of how many times a specific behaviour occurs
Measure repeated actions of a child, the whole group or the teacher
Function as: strategies are then implemented to reduce negative actions or increase desirable ones
Characteristics of time sampling
Used for children 3 years old and above in group settings
Records children's choices
Advantages of Time sampling
Gathers information on all children in the class at one time
Provide an estimation behaviour rather than document it
Teacher does not need to attend the children's behaviour all the time
Gives quantitative (numerical) information about attention span
Indicates child’s play and interest
Gives clues as to children’s strongest areas, inferred by choices
Gives clues about children’s less developed areas, inferred by avoidance
Indicates stage of play a child is at
Show preferred playmates
