KARATE BELTS /AWARDS STAND
VALUES OF THE CLIENT
adaptable
the product needs to be adaptable meaning it can fit in many areas around the house
it should also fit all the trophies and leave space for more achievements
worth the money
the client wants the product to be worth the money he is paying he doesn't want the product to break after one time in used
the manufacturer wants the product to be of a good quality so more people purchase the product the good name of the manufacture is intact
meets all the expectations
the client wants the stand to fit 8 belts,6 trophies and 6 medals
he wants the stand to have a plastic or glass to protect his achievements but to be strong enough to with stand impact
the client will pay for a products he thinks he will receive and that the product he should receive to build a bond between the customer and manufacturer
society
the product can not offend anyone , because the product relates to japan all the rues that are in japan should be followed and broken
the product will be made well meaning it wont break and will last a long time if the client gets bored then it can be easily recyclable
the product needs to be safe and not hurt the client as that would be unacceptable
MATERIALS
wood
Wood can be recycled easily it can reused or changed into ply boards or chip boards .
the customer wants a high quality product therefore a hard wood should be used as it has all the quality the customer is after
soft wood
soft wood is easy to carve into which is really useful because of the design the client wants
soft wood is much cheaper than hard wood as it comes from ever green trees
soft wood comes in a variety of shades and colours meaning more choice for the customer
soft woods are used for construction as they have a high resistance
hard wood
hardwood grows much slower and has fibres closer together
hard woods are much more expensive than soft woods as they take longer to grow
hard woods are tough and strong meaning they are impact resistant
they are durable if cared for properly meaning they can last you a life time and even be passed down to generations
comes in a variety of shades ranging from light to dark
wood is available in a different variety of colours the customer wants the product to be natural colour
most wood comes from north america but it comes down to county in bulk therefore being cheap to purchase
plastic
some types of plastic are recyclable acrylic plastic is not easily recyclable but it can be done
many people now have a issue with plastic being used as its made from crud oil and takes many many tears to decompose
the customer likes the idea of using acrylic plastic despite the cost as its impact resistant and can be engraved for example with the dates when each belt was revived
plastic id manufactured in the u meaning that it wouldn't have to travel far minimise the costs of travel and saving customer some money.
glass
The customer was not too keen on having glass in the design as its hard to maintain and can break easily.
Glass is recyclable and can be used again which is a huge positive as the product needs to be recyclable
the glass would have to be customer made which would mean unnecessary costs fro the customer
glass is manufactured in France which would mean that it would have to travel to England meaning its not very sustainable , we would also have to rely on the other manufacture to make the product on time which would delay the production time
metal
the design may include some metal parts like screws and nails to keep the wood together
metal is easily recyclable and can be changed and adapted
i will be purchasing all the metal parts as forging them would be time consuming and not time efficient
All the screws will be hidden away and covers up not allowing access to them after the stand will be assembled its meant to stay assembled and not taken apart
finish
the natural varnish will not cover up the wood of the grain but expose it a bit more
Varnish offers one of the most natural looks of any product available.
varnish soaks into the wood finish to enhance the natural wood colour
wax finish gives the wood a silky feel it also keeps the natural colour of the wood
glues
pva
s the most common type of glue that can be found in the home and it is an inexpensive and highly effectively bonding agent for basic indoor woodworking projects.
It is non-toxic and can be easily cleaned up with water
PVA glue can leave behind dried bits which can spoil the overall aesthetic appeal of furniture or a hobby-related project, this can be easily fixed by making
Cyanoacrylate (CA) Wood Glue
is used to bond two hard pieces of material together, and it is the best choice for quick and easy repairs as it cures or sets in a very short period of time
it forms a hard plastic-like bond, but when you apply it, the glue can be runny and messy
Epoxy-based Glue
uses a two-part bonding system: a resin and a hardener and it is specially formulated for filling gaps in softwoods and hardwood
works very well at bonding two pieces of wood together, but it takes a while to bond and you will need to clamp the wood down to create a stronger bond
Polyurethane Wood Glue
Polyurethane glue is one of the strongest and most durable types of wood glue
It is very versatile as it can be used for a lot of different materials like wood, plastic, stone, metal, ceramic, foam, glass, and concrete
MANUFACTURING
efficiency
some process can be time consuming like engraving , a machine could that that instead but that would take away for sentimental value
many process can be done in between saving time like wood can be cut when glue is drying or paint , some process can be seeded up like using screws to hold the wood along side the glue
i could create jigs to help with the repeatably of some of the identical parts which would increase the manufacturing speed and reduce labour costs
saving moeny
fording the metal parts could take longer and would have to be repeated many times whilst then can be purchased in the store saving money and time
the wood which is being used needs to be taken into account as hard wood is more expensive but it has the desired quality
equipment
the manufacturer needs to be safe when using all the equipment using the correct ppe like goggles and tying back hair
equipment like hand tools and machinery will both be used and both need to be coincided and used properly and safely
when using a band saw or jig saw the user needs to pay specific attention to make sure they are safe
APEARANCE
style
the client would like the design to link back to Japan therefore i will be considering the shape of Japaneses architecture for inspiration
the client has expressed that he would like the design fairly simple and classic , but he does not mind if the design has some intricate elements
The customer also wants natural wood used and for most of the design to be in a natural shade
colour
In Japan red is consider a lucky colour , therefore the design will feature some red using red would also be a respectful thing showing that the japan's culture has been coincided
shape
the shape of the design will be fairly simple with some elements which link to japan
the customer said that he would prefer a simple design which fits nicely on his dresser
The arts & crafts movements will be also a inspiration as its based on simple natural forms and the use of high quality material
customizable
the client wants the product to becustomisable featuring his name , and some Japanese writting importand to his club
The client wants the product to relate back to Japan which is the origin of karate therefore the product will have a engraved dragon to symbolise power strength and good luck
i will have to conciser different engraving methods we have available and their costs
A dremel costs around £20-£60 and allowe's for detailed hand engravings adding sentiment to the product also showing some of the values a dragon represnts
Another engraving method is a lazer cutter which can produce many of the same design over and over it would also be less time consuming and more accurate than if i was to do it by hand, it would take away from the hand made feeling
Computer-aided machine engraving is another option i could create the design on a computer and use the machine in school proving the design would fit this would be cost effective as i wouldn't have to spend money on any new equipment .
i could also use a cad,cam machine which we have available in school and that would be using my resources wisely , it would make a design on 2d design and use it to engrave.
